Roman Opałka was a French-born Polish painter who painted numbers. In 1965 he began painting a process of counting – from one to infinity. Starting in the top left-hand corner of the canvas and finishing in the bottom right-hand corner, the tiny numbers were painted in horizontal rows. As of July 2004, he had reached 5.5 million. A hand-lettered poster by artist Ben Shahn (1889–1969). The image was found in the outstanding Milton Glaser Design Study Center and Archives’ blog, containerlist. The above is page 64 of Love and Joy About Letters by Ben Shahn. New York: Grossman Publishers, 1963.
There’s no numeral in this one, but I can’t resist also posting my favorite Shahn drawing:

Lou Dorfsman, assisted by Herb Lubalin, created “his magnum opus, his gift to the world” in 1966 for the cafeteria in the CBS building on 52 st and 6 ave in New York City. CBS discarded the piece in the 90s where it remained in storage for years. With the help of designer Nick Fasciano, The Center for Design Study in Atlanta assumed responsibility for the restoration of the work, a Flickr set is here.
